Today is the start of Sunday School.

The church year at Methodist is the same as the start of the school year.

So, Sunday School would have been filled with those who were fortunate enough to afford church clothes and shoes. Generally, boys of the middle and lower class had one church shoe.

The Methodist church controlled that Grammar school. Once a boy from the working poor had gotten into Grammar School the intent was for him to eventually be absorbed into the middle class and maybe even the upper class if he went to university and married well.

Before the politician was the sole controller of state power, power to influence the social and financial outcomes of our boys and their families rested heavily in the hands of the School, Sunday, and the Priest/ Pastor.

Persons aspired, and diligently pursued scholarships in hope of entering higher social class and having access to a different kinda life away from the center of poverty.

80yrs ago Sunday school and general School was a place children went to work their aspirations of getting a better life.

100- years ago, If you were not of the right class, If you didn’t have a father to help with tuition, your your brown was darker than the brown paper bag maybe you didn’t meet the criteria fo receive a colonial education in St.Kitts.

Things are a lot different now.
