The CARICOM Youth Ambassadors SKN celebrates International Women’s Day 2023 by acknowledging Ms. Micheleina Charles Hazelle for her efforts towards transforming the landscape for educators.

Micheleina Charles-Hazelle is a community activist with a heart for education. She began her career in Education as a classroom teacher, a position she held for over a decade. Not only did she have the first hand experience of molding the mindset of her young students, but also the difficulties faced by herself and her peers. She recognized that teachers were fatigued and that the policies and working conditions lacked the care needed for teachers.

Instead of exiting the education fraternity, Ms. Charles-Hazelle intends to be a disruptor to these challenges. She believes that education is all encompassing and that is why she has been engaging other stakeholders. She has taken the concerns of the classroom teacher to the community. This activism has allowed parents, religious organizations and the corporate community to be a resource for teachers in maximizing student learning outcomes.

Micheleina has embarked on building a social enterprise dubbed “MCH (Making Change Happen)” which seeks to create spaces for educators. Next month, MCH will launch its first programming activity called “CPR for Teachers” which seeks to provide a peer to peer platform for motivation, sharing experiences and collaborating on ways to monetize their skills.

Being in an industry that directly impacts the youths of our Federation, Micheleina is interested in an education system that cares for its teachers. She wants teachers to remember that what they do matters and to know that they are capable of making changes through advocacy.
