At its best, advocacy for a mentally unwell loved one sparks positive change. Early collaboration between family members and healthcare providers can lead to pivotal breakthroughs in treatment plans, dramatically improving quality of life.

But handled poorly, disagreements about care can cause breakdowns in communication and treatment.

Here are a few ways I strive to keep advocacy productive when caring for my mother:

⭐️ Start with shared values. I begin discussions emphasizing our common goal of quality care.

🤝 Use inclusive language. I ask questions that acknowledge both medical expertise and my understanding of my mother’s daily life.

✅ Validate different viewpoints. I try to acknowledge the value of healthcare professionals’ input non-defensively.

🗣️ Express concerns constructively. I frame issues as shared challenges rather than accusations.

🤔 Seek to understand before being understood. I’m learning to ask clarifying questions about treatment decisions.

Despite these efforts, I find it challenging to consistently foster an environment of mutual respect and collaboration. Advocating for my mother while maintaining a productive relationship with her healthcare team is a difficult balance.
