Still learning the art of self-care and boundaries, I volunteered for a community church day camp. As a teacher after, I’ve juggled curricula, policies, and student needs, yet we’re expected to say ‘yes’ to every community activity.
Automatic Yes is the response of those of us who attain the status of “good” and “reliable” teachers.
Automatic Yes is what separates those who show up for the money from those who are “called” to the vocation of teaching.
The concept of resting to recover during break is almost always challenged because we get so many vacations.
Of course teachers are always resting. (side eye)
On my first day as community bible camp I was assigned the 12yrs old and above.
After receiving my group immediately started organizing the students in various categories, age, competency, learning difficulty, & difficulty.
After a few hours engaging the students, you can instinctively assign them to small groups to enhance differentiated learning with limited resources.
But in large classrooms, applying differentiated teaching sustainably can be challenging.
- Time Constraints: Crafting individualized lessons and support for diverse needs is time-consuming, increasing workload and time strain.
- Classroom Management: Managing varied activities simultaneously can be overwhelming, causing stress and frustration.
- Addressing Learning Gaps: Meeting individual learning gaps for all students feels daunting, leading to feelings of inadequacy.
- Inadequate Resources: Limited materials and support can hinder effective differentiation.
Educational institutions must support teachers with resources and training. Balancing differentiation’s beauty in large classrooms requires a collective effort to nurture both educators and students.”
