Yesterday I lost my grandmother and I lost a teacher
lets us remember life is a classroom and our community elders are teachers.
I miss her already
I miss her expectation of me
Her waiting on me
And pretending she ain’t really waiting
One of the last things she said to me is
Go help dem
Lord a sorry for dem because deh ain’t have nobody
Most of what we have is only each other
But she want help people
She always sorry for somebody
And sometimes I trying to explain
Look right I tired and is me and you main able again
And she would through den brown eyes my way and ask me
How would you feel if you ain’t had nobody, and somebody could help you and deh just leave you?
I wanted to tell her how much times I feel dah before
But we both felt that many times over before
But that question always got a small ok let’s go…
It’s easy to see what I did for her
But she did a lot for me as well
She taught me again how to love the lowly
For real
