If you understand the experience someone has then you will understand the meaning they will make about future experiences.
Meaning matters
Because the way we understand something determines how we respond to it.
So the best way to pre-set someone’s meaning is to give them a different experience.
Mommy has been so beaten up on by the world,
She is distrusting, and paranoid afraid of everything. –
I saw it. She has always been only a mouthy woman…
I will answer the offense … easily
So my instinct is to cover her. Let her walk behind me and use my bravery as a source.
But she doesn’t really want to walk behind me ehh, she wants to see the way and she has something to say about the direction…
But…
I was ready for combat at the hospital …
Because she deserved to feel safe and a sense of belonging like she deserved care…
The make shift community on the ward was a brilliant resource of care…
Angela was the trouble …
The past five days While they haven’t been easy, they definitely been a learning experience.
And one of the easiest hospital experience.
You guys look at me and call me blessed that’s because you don’t see me blasting.
But she is an incredible teacher of:
1. Compassion
2. Listen to me**
3. Humility
If you listen to a patient they will almost always tell you what they want.
I used to think the best way to help her was following my organized plan – checking things off the list.
My sense of compassion is very goal oriented
But she is making me better:
Just listen to me Micheleina- If I had not listened to her – we would not have had the surgery which is as a small surgery- I can see the improvements already.
My ability to care for is not – self- made
But I am becoming at the feet of the women who teach me things
Sometimes, the most important things aren’t on a to-do list – they’re learned by listening to those we care for
Collin is way better at the soft skills with Angela
