As a child who grew up in foster care, I prayed to be able to take care of myself and my family. Now, God has answered that prayer. Matthew 7:7
I’ve recently transitioned from caring for my grandmother to caring for my mother. While caring for my mom is demanding, I’m actively working on maintaining my well-being. This includes focusing on the principles outlined by Andrew Huberman’s
“6 Pillars of Strength.”
Here’s how I’m applying these principles:
- Sleep: I took a 3-hour power nap before coming home to ensure I had the energy I needed.
- Movement: I completed a 7-mile walk today.
- Sunlight: Being in the Caribbean certainly helps with this one – I soaked up some sunshine during my walk.
- Social Engagement: I intentionally connected with someone new at work today. I don’t know his name yet, but it felt good to have a conversation.
- Nutrition: Although I admit I indulged in some unhealthy snacks today, I’m intentional about cooking healthy, plant-based meals for my mom. I know I need to focus on my own nutrition as well.
- Stress Control: Asking Mom to help with small tasks like cleaning up after herself, cooking dinners, and going for walks all help reduce stress for both of us.
Taking care of my family is a gift that has grown my capacity to be human.
I know gifts like mercy are real
Reliance is a strength that carries us
And
Rest is a remedy to heal our self
Matthew 7:7
