As Caribbean brown women of working-class inheritance, we face the disproportionate duality of caregiving responsibilities for our elders and disabled family members while pursuing professional and personal ambitions.
It is challenging.
Sometimes this family responsibility makes our productivity inaccessible because the workload is humanly impossible on any day due to societal gender expectations,
Nevertheless, we have the strength to redefine what it means to be a modern Caribbean woman balancing these roles and protecting our productivity.
It is possible to protect our productivity.
It is hard but possible.
I am learning to systematize help.
Systematizing help involves actively seeking and building systems of support that allow us to care and achieve simultaneously.
Here are a few tips below
· Leveraging resources like respite care, caregivers, and family support
· Prioritizing tasks through detailed scheduling and productivity tools
· Communicating with employers about flexible work arrangements
· Seeking professional support through caregiver groups and counseling
· Prioritizing self-care activities for mind, body, and soul
By implementing these strategies, we can navigate the complexities of caregiving while achieving our dreams. Our resilience allows us to shatter constraints, honor our roots, and empower future generations of Caribbean women on this journey.
How do you systematize support and assistance in a way that allows you to effectively manage your workload and protect your productivity?
